Lockdown is a Mac security application built from the popular iAlertU. With a new interface, splash screen, and icon, Lockdown makes securing your Mac while you step away even easier than ever. You can customize its detection features by activating your computer's motion-sensors, keyboard-sensors, external device sensors, MagSafe sensors, and more to ensure that not even the slightest tap goes unnoticed.

Once your alarm has been set off, your computer will sound a loud alarm and prevent the system from being muted or put to sleep. Lockdown will take a snapshot of the offender using your computer's built in iSight and, if you've entered your e-mail address, e-mail the snapshot to the account of your choice.

Start the application and simply click the "Lock" icon in your menu bar and select "Lockdown" or hold down the "Menu" button on your Apple Remote to arm the system. Prey is a lightweight application that will help you track and find your laptop if it ever gets stolen. It works in all operating systems and not only is it Open Source but also completely free.

Recover what is rightfully yours Prey helps you locate your missing laptop by sending timed reports with a bunch of information of its whereabouts. This includes the general status of the computer, a list of running programs and active connections, fully-detailed network and wifi information, a screenshot of the running desktop and — in case your laptop has an integrated webcam — a picture of the thief.

Silent but deadly Prey uses a remote activation system which means the program sits silently in your computer until you actually want it to run. If so, it gathers all the information and sends it to your Prey web control panel or directly to your mailbox. The thief will never know his movements are being watched.

And because there’s always hope You may be thinking “but what’s the point of this program if the guy will probably just format the thing right away?” and you’re completely right. KeePassX is an application for people with extremly high demands on secure personal data management. It has a light interface, is cross platform and published under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

KeePassX saves many different information e.g. user names, passwords, urls, attachments and comments in one single database. For a better management user-defined titles and icons can be specified for each single entry. Furthermore the entries are sorted in groups, which are customizable as well. The integrated search function allows to search in a single group or the complete database.

A-Cownts is a new and first application that MacHouse has developed.  What is it?  A-Cownts offers you a quick way of saving and maintaining accounts.  And it's a freeware title for both Mac and Windows users.

We really like a shareware title called PasswordMaster which also allows users to store accounts.  But it's old, and nobody maintains it any more.  It's not in Universal Binary.  There are a lot of minor problems, too, like no support for the contextual menu and 2-byte characters like Chinese and Japanese...

A-Cownts works just like PasswordMaster.  This freeware version comes with three built-in tabs under which you can store accounts for different purposes.  Of course, you can customize tab labels quick and easy.

VUWER (pronounced like “viewer”) is an application designed to remotely track your Mac laptop (or any other Apple computer) in the event that it is lost or stolen.  If you can determine the location of your missing laptop, and the name, address, or image of the person using it, and provide this information to the police, then you may have a chance of recovering your property.  VUWER is not foolproof, but it is reasonably secure, easy to implement, and costs nothing but a little time and effort to set up.

 VUWER is a background process that automatically starts running upon login to a user account on your laptop.  VUWER periodically monitors a web page or remote computer account that you create.  By altering a line of text on the web page, or a text file on the remote account, you can instruct VUWER to automatically capture screen shots, iSight image files, and the IP address that your laptop is using to connect to the Internet, and send that information to you at regular intervals.
